Derek Curtis was born in 1967, England and achieved his BA (Hon’s) Fine Art at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design in 2000. He then spent two years as a guest student of Professor Timm Ulrichs at the Academy of Art in Munster, Germany. In 2002 he was awarded a Woo Foundation Graduate Bursary. Curtis explores the way nature and the natural world, in which we consume and live, is represented through today’s contemporary society. The ideas for his artistic practice evolve from the use of everyday materials used in conjunction with cultural or art historical references. His work takes the forms of paintings, sculptures and installations. Recent exhibitions include the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Art, London (2007), Galerie Schuster, Frankfurt, Germany (2006), The Bestiary at Jill George Gallery, London (2005) and at Spanien 19C, Aarhus, Denmark (2005). |
