The resulting graphic images depict fictional inventions which explore the relationship between human evolution and the development of technology.

Born in Seoul in 1980, Hong studied Printmaking at Hongik University, Seoul. In 2009, he attained his BA Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, London.

Recent exhibitions include Arco Art Fair, Feria de Madrid, Madrid 2011, 4482 Korean Contemporary Artists, Oxo Tower, London 2011, Journey to East, Jubilee Gallery, Nagoya, Japan 2011, The Monitor Lizard, Bearspace, London 2011, Multiplied Contemporary Editions Fair, Christie’s London 2010 and KIAF Korea International Art Fair, Seoul 2010. Collections include the UK Government Art Collection and Goldsmiths College, London.

Statement: In my paintings, people are posed inside machines and the machines are designed to function like the organs of a human body. In terms of my practices, I am playing with machines. My work is like a blueprint for building machines or a surreal space which human and machine inhabit together. The resulting graphic images depict fictional inventions which explore the relationship between human evolution and the development of technology. Focusing on the fusion of organic matter and machine, the works are directly etched and hand coloured in oil paint onto steel plate.

Mona’s art has consistently had a focus on humanity and our relationship with the planet.

Mona Choo was born in Singapore in 1970. She attained her BA Graphic Design and Illustration at Kingston University, UK in 1993.

In 2009, Mona was awarded the International Print-In-Residence at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. In 2010, she was commissioned by the FT and RBS Coutts to create three pieces of work for their annual ‘Women In Asia Awards’.

Mona’s art has consistently had a focus on humanity and our relationship with the planet. Our behaviour towards each other, current social issues and our attitude towards the natural environment inspire the visual commentary that make up the body of her work.

Recent exhibitions include the Bloomsbury Art Fair, London 2011, ArtSingapore 2009, The Gallery in Cork Street, London 2009, Agora Gallery, New York 2009 and Gallerie de Vle, Hong Kong 2009. Her work is in the collection of the Singapore Art Museum as well as in the United Overseas Bank, Singapore and Leo Burnett.

The bold use of black and white, rich and strong colours are commonly found in Li Fuyuan’s paintings

Li Fuyuan was born in Kunming, China in 1942 and attended the Beijing Art Academy. He was later appointed a lecturer at the Beijing Art Professional College whilst continuing with his own personal style of art. A disciple of the world renowned artist, Wu Guanzhong, his works have been exhibited successfully in the UK, USA, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Recent exhibitions include the 20/21 International Art Fair, London 2010 and the much acclaimed, Animal Kingdom:Paintings by Li Fuyuan at the Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, UK 2010. Several of his paintings were put under the hammer at Sotheby’s including Lot 838, Leopards sold in April 2010 at Sotheby’s Hong Kong.

Art critic and Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Arts, Zhai Mo, commented, ‘The dark coloured birds, fishes and animals came alive under his brush one after another. His paintings appear to be lively and bold, giving little attention to forms. The bold use of black and white, rich and strong colours are commonly found in Li Fuyuan’s paintings. To ensure the quality of the colours, he never mixes black ink with colours when painting. But he likes to put heavy black ink against the bright colours to create contrast, allowing them to support, embrace and complement each other.

To be bold and yet in control when creating, finding balance and calmness when emotions run wild is the hallmark of a great artist.’

I have created and developed a brush hatching technique using Japanese sumi ink and acrylic

Hideyuki was born in 1965 Aichi prefecture, Japan. He gained his BA at the Osaka University of Arts, Japan.

International exhibitions include Buy Art Fair, Manchester 2010, Lake Artists Society Summer Exhibition, Cumbria, UK and Lakeland Breeze 2010, Country Life, Wendy J Levy Gallery, Manchester 2010, National Trust, Nishinomiya, Japan 2009 and Group Show, Verrocchio Arts Center, Tuscany, Italy 2007.

Statement: I have created and developed a brush hatching technique using Japanese sumi ink and acrylic. This was inspired by the classic method of disegno established in Florentine school in the Renaissance era. Technically I have enhanced the concept by combining it with the latest neurological studies. The use of Japanese sumi ink which was propagated from ancient China is the key element of my practice to realise my attempt to gather the threads of narrative for bridging East and West.

She achieved a MA in Illustration and Design at the University of Sunderland, UK. Currently she is in Beijing.

Born in 1977, China, Nie Chun-Mei graduated with a BA in Fine Art at the University of Nationalities, Beijing in 2002. In 2006, she achieved a MA in Illustration and Design at the University of Sunderland, UK. Currently she lives and works in Beijing.

Recent exhibitions include the much acclaimed, Cutting Edge:Untraditional Papercuts, 2010 at the Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, UK.

Cutting Edge move a step further on from the contemporary themes into new and untraditional forms of paper cutting. This new innovation focus on colours with the layering of multi colours within a piece, to create a sense of depth.

Michel Lee, curator of the Museum of East Asian Art enthused “It’s great to be able to have such an appropriate exhibition during the Lunar New Year. Not only does it draw from Chinese tradition, but the techniques these papercut artists use are groundbreaking. They really illustrate how artists are bringing a craft tradition to the present day in the form of modern art.”
