Li Fuyuan was born in Kunming, China in 1942. He was a top student of the world renowned Chinese artist, Wu Guanzhong. After he graduated from Beijing Art Academy, he was appointed lecturer at the Beijing Art Professional College.
Since 1988, his works have been exhibited in many countries including Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, UK and USA. My works search for purity and simplicity and yet they are strong in expression. To be truthful to my feelings and expressing them sincerely are the principles I abide by always in my life as an artist. ‘The dark coloured birds, fishes and animals came alive under his brush one after another. His paintings appear to be lively and bold, giving little attention to forms. The bold use of black and white, rich and strong colours are commonly found in Li Fuyuan’s paintings. To ensure the quality of the colours, he never mixes black ink with colours when painting. But he likes to put heavy black ink against the bright colours to create contrast, allowing them to support, embrace and complement each other. To be bold and yet in control when creating, finding balance and calmness when emotions run wild is the hallmark of a great artist.’ (by Zhai Mo, fellow at the China Academy of Art and art critic). |
