Zhang Xing

Zhang Xing was born in Xian, China in 1972. He graduated from the Xian Academy of Fine Arts in 1995 and taught art at the academy for three years. Zhang started with abstract but changed his painting styles in recent years. Recently he has been inspired to do portrait works that express his innermost feelings through his personal experience. His paintings embody passive atmosphere of uneasiness like the portrayal of Christopher Reeve which reflected life endurance. The combination of dark and stimulant colours create strong subjectivity in his paintings.

His works had been selected for exhibitions at the Xian Academy of Fine Art Gallery, China and at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters at the Mall Gallery in London.

Zhang describes his latest work as being "inspired by the geometrical beauty of modern architecture and industrial objects", and is his "attempt to evoke human feelings within the cold and emotionless concrete shapes and shadows".He paints with thin colour and plenty of turpentine, a technique partly influenced by abstract art and minimalism.
